PARANOIA AGENT (3 DVDs)
Episodes 1-5 (of 13)

Panini Video is proud to present to the Italian public PARANOIA AGENT, the first animated series created by the great Japanese director Satoshi Kon, the author famous throughout the world for masterpieces such as Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers and the recent Paprika, which had its world premiere at the last Venice Film Festival and which is in the running for an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Film. PARANOIA AGENT is an original story in 13 episodes, created by the author together with his historic partner, the Madhouse studio, famous for creating anime such as Trigun, Gungrave and Nana.
As is to be expected from a sophisticated author such as Kon, PARANOIA AGENT is a complex and richly symbolic title, a highly unusual product aimed at a demanding public. The story is set in present-day Tokyo, and revolves around a mysterious criminal who attacks passers-by, hitting them with a strange baseball bat. His first victim is the young and introverted Tsukiko Sagi, a designer famous for having created a highly popular mascot in Japan, but who is now in the grip of a creative crisis. No-one knows who this mysterious criminal is, or why he commits his crimes: the only sure thing is that he seems to be a primary school boy who moves around on rollerblades. Two investigators begin following the case but they immediately understand there is something strange going on. A journey into an ambiguous reality created by the people’s paranoid ravings. A journey invented and realized by one of the greatest contemporary authors!
BIOGRAPHY
Satoshi Kon was born in Hokkaido on October 12 1963. When he was young he attended art school with the intention of becoming a painter, and on finishing his studies he began working for the manga World Apartment Horror on the texts of the famous author Katsuhiro Otomo, creator of AKIRA and Steamboy. In 1991 he made his debut in the world of animation with Roujin Z, working alongside Otomo, an author who would heavily influence Kon’s early style. In 1993 he collaborated with Mamoru Oshii (GHOST IN THE SHELL, BLOOD THE LAST VAMPIRE) on the film Patlabor 2: The Movie, while in 1996 he worked on one of the episodes of the film Memories, based on another manga by Otomo. Finally in 1997 he made his directorial debut with Perfect Blue, a thriller which brought him awards from the FantAsia Film Festival in Montréal and the Fantasporto Film Festival in Portugal. His second film was Millenium Actress (2001), followed by Tokyo Godfathers (2003), another great success both at home and the rest of the world. Later he turned his efforts to PARANOIA AGENT, and finally to Paprika, his most recent production, which is enjoying great success throughout the world.
