SAMURAI CHAMPLOO
Animated series (26 episodes in 6 DVDs) Japan 2004

Following on from Cowboy Bebop, the great Shinichiro Watanabe creates and directs SAMURAI CHAMPLOO, a rhythmic and sophisticated new series in 26 episodes. The story takes place in an imaginary medieval Japan, in the heart of the Edo period, where the young waitress Fu saves skilled warrior and vagabond Mugen and the enigmatic rônin (samurai without a master) Jin from execution. Together the trio set out on a long journey in search of the samurai who smells of sunflowers. A journey which will lead them across the country and bring them face to face with all kinds of characters. Like Cowboy Bebop, SAMURAI CHAMPLOO is characterised by an unusual setting, a simple but effective narrative plot, the unconventional and quarrelsome band of main characters, and the ambiguous fascination of the numerous secondary characters. The expressive contribution of the soundtrack is fundamental: this time the chosen genre is hip-hop (one of the director’s passions) with tracks by Nujabes (Japanese producer and hip-hop DJ) and Fat Jon among many. The rapid movements and modern soundtrack are supported by a schizophrenic mise-en-scène, with frenetic editing, widespread warping of the images and simulation of a hand-held camera.
